NEW DELHI: Six teenage girls, trafficked from Assam and West Bengal and forced into prostitution, were rescued during two separate raids launched in Delhi and Panipat, police said on Friday.
In the first incident, a joint team of the Delhi Police, West Bengal Police and members of NGO Shakti Vahini rescued three girls from a house in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar on Thursday morning.
The victims said that a youth had befriended them on a social networking site and promised to offer them jobs in Delhi. The girls were found to be locked in secret rooms of the house in Vinod Nagar. In the second operation, three more girls were rescued while being taken to Panipat in Haryana on Thursday night.
According to Rishi Kanth from Shakti Vahini, the three girls rescued from Laxmi Nagar were brought to Delhi four months ago from a village in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. A trafficker bought them for Rs 2 lakh. They were allegedly raped by the trafficker and later, forced into prostitution.
The other girls are from Assam. The NGO officials said that one of the victims was brought to Delhi by a youth named, Rakesh Kumar, on the pretext of marrying her. She was confined to a house in Azadpur Subzi Mandi and raped for days before being taken to Panipat.
Another victim had managed to call her family members using the mobile phone of a customer after which they had informed the local police, the NGO officials said.
The victims were taken for a medical examination after they were rescued. They have been provided temporary shelter at a women’s home. “We have asked the authorities in Delhi, Assam and West Bengal to investigate the trafficking racket being run by Rakesh and to arrest all the members of the gang,” said Kanth.
