Summer of Bikes!

First off, HUGE thanks to the TBR supporters who came out to make another annual fundraiser a success, and to all the amazing volunteers who made it happen. The event has evolved into a tradition that people don't want to miss.  That means a lot to our collective.

In June, the City of Troy passed a Complete Streets ordinance!  This is pretty big news to bicycle advocates. The ordinance will require an advisory board to review all City planning projects to assure that developers, designers, and other agencies consider all users of the roads.  The City also passed a resolution to bond matching funds that will allow the Riverfront Trail project to go forward.  This project includes bikelanes, signage, pedestrian improvements, and will connect the 378 Menands Bridge to the Uncle Sam Bikeway in North Troy.

And... this week is Troy's turn at the NY Capital Region Bike Share.  The Bike Share is a version that has been introduced in Buffalo, NY, and has been brought east for a month by the Capital District Transportation Committee as a test run.  The project is spending a week in each city: Schenectady, Troy, Albany, and Saratoga.  If you want to borrow a bike (for free), take yourself, and a valid credit card to Riverfront Park any day this week during daylight hours, and check it out!
Thursday Shop AKA FemShop wants to teach you bicycle mechanics! Thursday Shop is an open shop dedicated to creating a safe space for Women, Trans, Fem, Queer and anyone for whom gender has been a barrier in learning bike mechanics. If this sounds like the night for you, stop by any Thursday starting in August from 5-8. Already have skills? volunteers are needed as well.
RIDE OF SILENCE
Tuesday July 22 6pm
At King & Federal Sts.
Troy's cycling community will memorialize recently fallen 53 year-old cyclist Stephen Nolan with a silent bike ride, and the dedication of a 'ghost bike' near King and Federal Streets, where he was struck by a car on June 2nd, 2014.  The organizers hope that their efforts will highlight the dire need for safety and accessibility improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists on the streets of Troy.  Please join the ride of silence in solidarity, mourning, and hope for more awareness of cyclists.
The Building-Next-Door Saga is over ...
for now.

Back in May, the building next door to us began to collapse.  Part of the collapse actually took out part of the parapet wall on our building.  If you followed on Facebook, or tried to come to the shop, you know that we spent the month of June CLOSED for public safety! :(   Well, we are happy to announce that the building has been stabilized, our wall has been repaired, and we have been open and very busy for the last few weeks.

Let’s Ride! But First…

Before you jump on your trusty bike for a run to the grocery, the trip to work, or a new adventure, it’s a good idea to do a quick safety check.  Here are just a few things to do before you ride out into the world:

Squeeze the tires, spin the wheels and look at the tires as they go around. Do the tires feel firm, or do they need air? Do you see any bald spots or splits or cuts in the tire? Do the wheels spin freely, or are they rubbing someplace?

Try to wiggle each wheel side-to-side, then try wiggling each pedal, and the crank arms the pedals screw into. A wiggle means something is loose and could be dangerous.

Check the brakes. Will they stop the bike, especially if you have to stop in a hurry?

Check the handlebars. Can you twist them up and down? Can you turn them side-to-side while holding the front wheel still? If you can, something is dangerous.

Turn the font wheel all the way to one side and then try moving the bike forward and back, while looking at the fork. If it wiggles, the headset could be loose.

Grab the seat and try to twist it. It should not turn.

Check the chain. Is it tight? Pick up the back wheel and turn the pedals to operate the chain.

If all runs smoothly, you should be safe to ride. Just remember to ride safely, too!
