I have a standing Uncle Rock gig every Thursday at First Steps Preschool in Woodstock, NY. In the time between Halloween and Christmas/Chanukah, we sing the usual fare, which they love. But around Thanksgiving time - Uncle Rock's favorite holiday - we have only "Over The River and Through the Woods." Nothing about gratitude.
Like a lot of folks, I am ambivalent about the avaricious nature of the Holidays, and I felt compelled to introduce kids to the notion of gratitude, especially for things that can't be purchased in a store; things, in fact, that they already have. So I wrote a Thanksgiving song with those ideas in mind. I'm happy to say the kids, who are 3 and 4 years old, love this tune and sing it really, really loud, sometimes incorporating choreography. Feel free to do the same.
If you'd like to purchase Hold It In My Heart (Thanksgiving Song), you can. It's on my holiday CD Express Your Elf, available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rbwarren7
Thanks to Mark Lerner, who produced and played bass, and designed the CD cover, which features artwork by my father-in-law, Alvis George. Thanks also to Mark's son Lukas gave us that rock beat with ace drumming, and to Nancy Howell, wife of Mark, mom of Lukas, who loaned me her black Telecaster.
HOLD IT IN MY HEART
Now here's the best part
It's crazy but it's true
When you give what's in your heart
It comes right back to you.
The sunshine smile that you gave to me
I'm gonna hold it in my heart
The loveI feel from my family
I'm gonna hold it in my heart.
And say thank you, thank you for
What I can't buy in any store
Thank you, merci beaucoup
Thank you to you-hoo-hoo
My friends and me, we've got a special thing
I'm gonna hold it in my heart
We've got a song we'll teach you to sing
I'm gonna hold it in my heart.
And say thank you, thank you for
What I can't buy in any store
Thank you, merci beaucoup
Thank you to you-hoo-hoo.
Now here's the best part
It's crazy but it's true
When you give what's in your heart
It comes right back to you.
I'm gonna hold it in my heart.
