CHEROKEE - Regardless of what happens during Saturday's state championship, it will not be Tye Mintz's final high school game.

Cherokee's senior quarterback will play in the 81st annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, but as a defensive back, after being called up as an alternate this past weekend. Mintz joins Murphy quarterback Joey Curry and Hendersonville wide receiver Tykel Landrum on the 44-player North Carolina roster.

Mintz has thrown for 1,988 yards this season, rushed for 1,593 yards and scored 49 combined touchdowns for the Braves. He has over 60 tackles and three interceptions as a defensive back.

The Shrine Bowl will be played at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at 2 p.m. Dec. 16.

Cherokee will face No. 1 North Duplin this Saturday at noon at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh for the 1A state title.
