SOUTH UNION SHAKER VILLAGE CLOSED

Monday, August 21, 2017

*Please Note—SOUTH UNION SHAKER VILLAGE will be CLOSED on MONDAY, AUGUST 21st for a private event.

The Shakers at South Union noted the eclipse of the sun on Saturday, August 7, 1869. The event drew little fanfare from the journal keeper, who noted, “ Eclipse of the Sun—nearly total—total at Pleasant Hill.” 19th century manuscript letters and journals seem to be consistent in the Shakers’ perceived lack of enthusiasm with regard to what we in the 21st century often sensationalize. Even an 1820 visit from the President of the United States and General Andrew Jackson didn’t receive as much journal space as news of cedar trees being cut for fences, posted the day before. The June 17, 1820 entry read, “Visit—President Monroe & suit, Gen’l Jackson & family dine here today.” It was a time when daily life took precedent over the out-of-the-ordinary.
