Broncos sign DL Nelson Adams, officially place Billy Winn on IR

The Denver Broncos signed defensive lineman Nelson Adams on Saturday and placed defensive lineman Billy Winn on injured reserve, the team announced.

Winn has to undergo a season-ending knee surgery after tearing his ACL against the Chicago Bears in a preseason game on Thursday. Before his injury, Winn was projected to be Denver’s No. 2 nose tackle this season.

Adams (6-3, 287 pounds) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State earlier this offseason. The Steelers waived Adams on Aug. 5 to make room for cornerback signee JaCorey Shepherd.

Adams recorded 80 tackles and four sacks during his four seasons at Mississippi State. He will become the fourth nose tackle on the roster, joining Domata Peko, undrafted rookie Tyrique Jarrett and Kyle Peko, who is currently on the physically unable to perform list.

Once the younger Peko becomes healthy, Adams will likely become the team’s fourth-string nose tackle. He’ll serve as the No. 3 tackle in the meantime.

Adams will wear jersey No. 62 with the Broncos.
