Race For The Moon

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Ivee is happy with her life; feeling safe behind the gates of the Northlander’s camp in the Northern Division of Athol. Things were good until her sister gets kidnapped by another faction—the Downenders. Ivee receives a map and a message; she has a week, which is the next full moon, to make her way to the southern end of the city, to save her sister.

As she sets out on her journey; Ivee discovers how different everything has truly become outside the gates of her home. She witnesses—Phantom Airships, Manbots and Ghostly Wolves—as just a few of the surprise encounters during her quest. She is not alone; one of her campmates joins her mission, and she also meets a handsome and mysterious boy, called the Savior. He teams up for their journey, only saying he has unfinished business with the Downies.

Many truths arise during the adventure, the biggest truth Ivee discovers is that she will do whatever it takes to persevere, against the terrors of the dark new land.

Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review.

We’re introduced to Ivee and her sister at the start of the story. As a tinkerer, Ivee enjoyed nothing more than working in her workshop on items from the time before the adults disappeared and the world became the children’s.

Her world is turned upside down when her sister is kidnapped and she is told to journey to the Downenders’ camp by the next full moon (a week) to save her sister. On her journey she picks up a couple of surprise companions that may prove beneficial by the end of her journey.

The story was well written and grabbed my attention on the first page. There’s an enormous amount of backstory as to what happened to the adults and the future of the children that is sprinkled throughout the story. It was refreshing and highly enjoyable to leave so many things open to question to keep the reader guessing throughout.

I thought the characters were well done and realistic. I have to admit, I liked Ivee initially, but she quickly took a back seat to the mysterious stranger Savior. I love characters that come out of nowhere and have a mystery about them so Ivee didn’t really stand a chance. Given who the Savior ends up being, he sets a great hook and lead-in for the next book. I’m a big fan of Michelle’s books, and I have to say I think this is her best one yet. It’s a phenomenal start in a new genre for her (Steampunk) and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

First off, I have to say that I have read most of Michelle’s work and it never ceases to amaze me how different each project feels. Each one has its own distinct soul and this one was no exception. It centers around a girl named Ivee who is living in a world where the adults have disappeared and the teens/kids have formed their own mini-societies.

The different camps in the book are clearly defined and Michelle does a great job of not only setting up this world, but the different characters who inhabit it. Ivee is a fun, strong heroine who has a love for science and a disdain for fighting. During the course of the novella (the first in a series), Ivee finds herself forced into an adventure that has a profound effect on her outlook on different things. I am really interested to see how it all plays out in the end.
