against all odds -- a book review

Joe Tarasuk's Against All Odds:  A Miracle Journey of Recovery and Success is the best an autobiography can be -- to tell his story is to tell the story of God with him.  In it, Tarasuk recounts his journey from being a cocaine addict who also deals, to his time in a cult, to his spiritual journey toward Jesus.

It's a compelling story that peers into the darkness of our human hearts and how that darkness overwhelms lives in the world.  It's also a fascinating story that talks about deliverance from bondage -- both literal and figurative -- for himself and his wife.

What makes Against All Odds a page-turner is Tarasuk's honesty.  He rightly portrays the Christian life as a journey, which sometimes crawls and sometimes meanders.  But the journey is always toward and in and with Christ.

As the book closes, the sense of that journey becomes an anticipation for the future of his ministry with the least, the lost, the forgotten, the enslaved, and the imprisioned.  His is a real life, even a struggle.  But Against All Odds is the story of a real life.  Because it's a story of a life with Jesus.  And that makes all the difference in the world.
