Alun Wyn Jones a doubt for Wales' Rugby World Cup opener against Uruguay

Wales second-row star Alun Wyn Jones is a doubt for their opening Rugby World Cup match against Uruguay.

The experienced second-row is currently struggling with the medial ligament strain he picked up in their win in Ireland which is set to keep him out for "a couple of weeks".

With Jones a doubt for their opener, Gatland has loaded the lock stocks in Wales' 31-man squad with Jake Ball, Luke Charteris, Bradley Davies and Dominic Day included in the party alongside the Ospreys second-row.

"That engine room is so important for us," Gatland said. "We looked at that area and decided that it needs to function so if players do pick up knocks, we've got cover for them.

"Alun Wyn should only be out for a couple of weeks but you never know with medial stuff. Luke Charteris got a bang on the leg and Bradley Davies played his first match for five and a half months against Ireland.

"We might have to have some tough conversations with the second-rows because if you are ruled out for a couple of weeks then you will probably be replaced."

Wales are also waiting on tight-head Samson Lee and versatile back Liam Williams as they continue their respective recoveries from injury.
