made in the usa -- a book review

Sex trafficking is one of the most under-addressed problems in America; and precisely because we know so little about it, we do even less.  I realized this some years ago when a former student made sex trafficking her semester research and service learning project.  As a pastor, after that semester, I knew something needed to be said and done by the Church.  But where to turn, who could guide us?

Enter Alisa Jordheim.  Her masterful book Made in the USA:  The Sex Trafficking of America's Children is a clarion call from someone with a genuine prophet's voice.

Each chapter opens with statistics.  But those statistics take a real form in the stories that follow.  And each closes with particular advice.

Each of those chapters addresses unique perspectives of all the ways sex trafficking happens in America.  Loverboy Syndrome.  Familial Trafficking.  Survival Sex and Male Exploitation.  Kidnapping.

But it's the final chapters that offer the most wisdom for that doing something that is the prophetic call of justice.

All of which makes Made in the USA a gift for the Church.  It opens up a conversation of what it means to be Jesus' community of understanding and hope that is the very heart of the gospel. And though the content is often quite explicit, turning a blind eye means refusing to see Jesus in the imprisoned and suffering.  In the lives of these kids.

If you want to be that community of prophetic action, read and live out this book!
