Is That An Alien Ray Gun In Your Finger...?
We now like to start off teaching kids as early as possible that they don't have free speech -- for example, by suspending them for the use of an imaginary laser gun.
Robby Soave writes at reason:
Stacy Middle School in Milford, Massachusetts, took steps to neutralize a dangerous public nuisance: 10-year-old Nickolas Taylor, who had threatened some of his classmates with his weapon of choice while cutting in line. That weapon is an imaginary laser gun, which he conjured into existence by pointing his finger and uttering laser noises. Quick, get this maniac away from other kids before he disintegrates them with his mind!
Thankfully, school officials intervened and suspended the aspiring sci-fi villain.
Well you can hardly blame the school official - thinking is hard work, best not to bother with it.

I feel so reassured, the school officials saved the day. Clearly, his next move was to rob the cafeteria of Michelle Obama's tasty and nutritious school lunches using a straw and spitballs.... Oh, the horror!
We have, a terrorist in the making!

I don't see the problem. It's not like it was a pop tart or anything.

another teachable moment lost by stupid adults...
"People who cut in line go... to the back of the line."
and
"your laser guns are no good here, because we have forcefields, and you still end up at the back of the line. so put it away..."

The only thing a kid can do in school these days and NOT get in trouble for it... is FAIL.

Oh, there was a teachable moment, all right, just not the one intended. The Captain's Journal has the Boston Globe writeup on the case, which says:
The lesson? You can get somebody suspended by tattling on him. If that's the kind of thing that gets rewarded, I suppose strategic tattling is a good skill to have.
Way to go, grown-ups.
(BTW: I R A Darth Aggie, your link earlier today is the reason I saw the one above. Thanks!)
