An Apple and a Couple of Brazil Nuts a Day

By Pamela Frank, BSc(Hons), ND

Wanting to stay healthy and avoid chronic disease? We have all heard that antioxidants are good for us, but do we know which foods pack the biggest antioxidant punch?  According to a recent study published in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design, the following foods are the heaviest antioxidant hitters: Brazil nuts, coffee, chocolate, collard greens, apples, beets, beans, oranges, and onions.

Should you drink lots of coffee? No, I usually recommend people restrict their coffee intake to a cup or less per day. Chocolate or beets?  In moderation too because of the sugar content. Beans? Sometimes too gassy.  Onions? Sometimes make for bad breath, but they are also a good source of quercetin which helps with allergies. Oranges, apples and Brazil nuts it is then!  Skip the orange or apple juice though and eat the whole, preferably organic fruit.  Stacy has posted an awesome Paleo Apple Crisp recipe below just in time for apple season.

New Product Alert - GI Revive

The root of many health problems is the digestive tract. Having a strong, healthy intestinal wall can help prevent parasites, yeast overgrowth and SIBO.  A leaky gut wall contributes to the development of food allergies.  Nutrients like N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG), l-glutamine, pectin, licorice, aloe vera, slippery elm, chamomile and zinc carnosine can help soothe and repair the gut wall.
