Off-duty trooper arrested on domestic violence charges

An off-duty State Police trooper was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of domestic assault and battery for allegedly seriously injuring a woman at his central Massachusetts home, State Police said.

The 36-year-old trooper, a member of the Division of Field Services stationed in Troop C, has not been identified. In a statement, State Police cited state law prohibiting the release of names of persons charged with domestic violence under certain circumstances.

State Police arrested the trooper at his home in Royalston shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday.

She was taken to Heywood Hospital in Gardner, State Police said, for treatment of a “serious but non-life-threatening injury.”

The nature of the relationship between the trooper and the woman was not released by police.

The trooper was taken into custody and relieved of duty pending a duty status hearing expected to take place early this week. His service weapons and ammunition were confiscated, as were his badge, cruiser, and other job-related equipment, according to State Police.

State Police also took possession of several privately owned guns and ammunition that were stored at his home. His license to carry a firearm will be suspended indefinitely, according to State Police.

He is being held at State Police barracks in Millbury with bail set at $25,000 and is expected to be arraigned Monday in Gardner District Court, State Police said.
