Rural innovation effort wins $20 million grant

More rural students in North Carolina and several other states will gain new opportunities for college readiness under a new initiative led by NC New Schools and funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Thursday during a visit at UNC Greensboro that NC New Schools has been awarded a $20 million grant to expand our work extending the reach of early-college strategies into additional rural areas of North Carolina and into four other states.

From the National Alliance: "We’ve all seen headlines like, “U.S. High-School Students Slip in Global Rankings,” (Wall Street Journal, Dec. 3, 2013). But we also know our students can do better. For the first time, individual public charter schools can see how well they are preparing students for 21st century success as compared to schools around the world.

Starting in fall 2014, public charter schools can sign up for the OECD Test for Schools, which is based on the internationally-respected PISA test, administered in more than 70 countries. This new tool measures the knowledge of 15 year olds in reading, math, and science, as well as their ability to reason, analyze information, and solve complex problems.

The test is free. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools will cover the assessment cost for each public charter school in exchange for agreeing to share school results. Read more here...

Aletha Buck and I enjoyed our visit to the southernmost Carolina charter conference November 7. We enjoyed many of our charter friends in Columbia. Recognize the yellow School Choice Week scarves? Get used to them!

For a real look at how you are perceived by districts see this report just published by Charlotte Mecklenburg's Board of Education. I have said that CMS paid particular attention to our growth and Heath Morrison, to his credit, was doing something about it before his sudden departure. Incidentally, part of that departure was reportedly due to his handling of costs for a new "Early College" he may have gotten off the ground "too early". I wrote about this here.

This "Separating Fact & Fiction" document published by the National Alliance has already been highly recommended reading by me and linked here earlier this year, but I even suggest you make it mandatory reading by your staff and parent leaders.

I hope all of you are allowed  an opportunity this week to reenergize your bodies, minds, and spirits! Happy Thanksgiving.

Assessment For Learning and Development in K-3

In response to legislation passed by North Carolina’s General Assembly and to meet requirements of the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant, NCDPI’s Office of Early Learning is designing a developmentally appropriate, individualized assessment for K-3 children.

Purposeful Play: The Balancing Act of Today’s Busy Classroom

North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Early Learning is currently designing and piloting a developmentally appropriate, individualized assessment process for K-3 children. This process will be used by all school districts and is intended to be formative in nature. The K-3 Formative Assessment Process is envisioned to inform daily instructional practices, such as purposeful play and other developmentally appropriate activities for young children.  Click here to read more

 From our readers

Thank you Eddie for a very insightful interview.  We appreciate your time in speaking with us and I can say that it was extremely helpful both for our project and professionally.

Eddie,

I find your newsletter updates invaluable. Thanks for the time and energy you put into keeping us informed. Especially helpful to me are updates on initiatives and grants that help rural charters. With 43 counties unrepresented by charters, I believe rural communities are the most underrepresented of all of North Carolina's population.

Fight the good fight!

A NOTE FROM NINA

Dear Eddie,

This month’s elections shifted the political landscape in Washington, D.C. and in state capitals across the country, and supporters of public charter schools in both parties scored solid victories. Now that attention will turn from campaigning to governing, we look forward to working with members of both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate to advance sound education policy and increase support for the federal Charter Schools Program that has helped so many charter schools open their doors and begin serving students.

We will also work with our state-level partners to build and strengthen relationships with new and returning governors and other state leaders. For more on our thoughts on the impact of the elections, check out this interview Todd Ziebarth did for Education Week or view my latest U.S. News column.

Our message is simple and powerful: Public charter schools play a vital role in strengthening our public education system for students and families, and with more than one million student names on wait lists to attend a charter school, we need to do all we can to grow with quality.

I encourage you to do your part, too! One great step is to take our pledge to fight for the day that parents in every community and from every walk of life will have the opportunity to send their child to a high-performing public school. With more allies on our side, we’ll have an even greater impact for students and families.

As always, thank you for all you do to support and grow our movement.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Nina Rees, President and CEO National Alliance

DeansList makes it easy to manage a school-wide behavior system. Our software gives schools the tools to stay on top of all the non-academic info that matters - things like classroom behavior, referrals and send-outs, detentions, and positive character traits. With DeansList, teachers and administrators to track student behavior and automatically share that information with other staff members and parents, driving improvements in non-cognitive skills, social-emotional learning and build "21st century skills" like perseverance, diligence, creative problem solving skills and leadership.

Best,
