Drinking Five Cups of Coffee a Day Might Be Good For You After All

A new report from the U.S. nutrition panel finds three to five cups per day is linked to numerous health benefits.

Good news for people who drink a crap ton of coffee: It may actually be good for you. According to the Washington Post, a new report just released by the federal government's Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee says consumption of between three and five cups of coffee per day "is tied to several health benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes."

Turns out most people don't drink nearly that much, though: The Post cites a USDA statistic which says that "Americans only drink about one cup of coffee per day," so perhaps it's time to load up the ol' Starbucks card and get drinking.

Note that this doesn't quite translate to an official recommendation from the government just yet, however:

It remains to be seen whether the Department of Health and Human Services or the Agriculture Department will take the committee's recommendations for coffee intake to heart and include them in the official dietary guidelines update, which is due out later this year. But it's rare for the government agencies to ignore the panel's advice, so it's fair to expect a federal endorsement for drinking coffee—as much as five cups a day no less—to be just around the bend.

In the meantime, consider this the perfect excuse to visit every damn cat cafe in North America.
