Anytime West Virginia State and the University of Charleston meet on a field or court it is important to both teams.
There is a long standing rivalry between the neighboring Kanawha County schools.
This weekend will be no different.
The Yellow Jackets (26-12)Â play a doubleheader at Charleston beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and then finish out the season with a home doubleheader against the Golden Eagles starting at 1 p.m. Sunday.
WVSU has clinched the South Division of the Mountain East Conference but the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament goes to the team with the best conference record.
Not that there is much difference between seeded first and second. The draws will be very similar in either case.
Still, going into this final weekend of the regular season WVSU and Northern Division champion Shepherd each have a 21-7 mark in the MEC.
Shepherd hosts Fairmont State in a twinbill Saturday and ends the season on the road against the Falcons Sunday.
Both Fairmont State at 20-26 overall and 10-18 in the MEC and Charleston at 15-30 and 9-19 are out of the hunt for a tournament spot as only the top three finishers in each division qualify. So all that is left for those teams is playing the role of spoiler.
The Yellow Jackets have been on a tear duringteh second half of the season winning 10 of their last 12 games and posting an 18-4 record after an 8-8 start.
