168. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT: Courage is exhilarating
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was an American politician, diplomat and activist. I was only vaguely familiar with Eleanor as the wife of FDR, until I recently learnt of her full awesomeness when watching Ken Burns’ epic seven-part, 14-hour documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. The series covers in great detail the incredible lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Being Australian, we’re not really taught American history and I was only watching it because of my admiration of Teddy Roosevelt, so I wasn’t really familiar with FDR and Eleanor. But their lives are just as fascinating and the whole series was a joy to watch.
Eleanor had a troubled childhood, her mother, who thought her daughter was ugly, died when Eleanor was young, followed by her brother the following year. Her father was an alcoholic and also died young. She suffered from depression throughout her life, and just like her favourite uncle Theodore, she coped with her sadness by living a life of action.
During the 12 years Eleanor was by her husband’s side in the White House, she redefined the role of First Lady. Not content to spend her time hosting lunches and afternoon teas, Eleanor rolled up her sleeves and championed numerous causes. She helped establish a community for homeless miners during the Great Depression, was integral in helping the civil rights movement and fought tirelessly for women’s equality. Eleanor was soon the most famous woman in the world thanks to her own nationally broadcast radio show and syndicated newspaper column.
After FDR’s death and the end of WWII, Eleanor was named a delegate to the newly formed United Nations and later became the chairperson of the Commission of Human Rights. She played an integral role in drafting what became the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This quote was used in the final episode of the Roosevelt Documentary and was taken from Eleanor’s book You Learn By Living, which she wrote near the end of her life. There’s a great article about the book on Brain Pickings.

“Seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared.”
This hits me right in the gut. I blow small things out of proportion. Once I actually do them, I smack myself in the head because it was so simple. It just felt like a big deal!
Fantastic comic to help us ignore the haters too. Shut them up with great stuff!
I agree chris, that line is brilliant.
I. LIKE. IT!
We all need a bit of this in our life, this inspiration, as well as diving in to a bit of courage through our lives, makes for much fruitful living! 🙂
Cheers Gav!
I didn’t know much about ELEANOR ROOSEVELT until today. I feel so ignorant.
There are a lot of great quotes on this website like this but they cant really make a difference in anyone’s life if you don’t make the effort to apply what they teach in your daily life.
Does anyone (or do you) have any tips on internalising these teachings and integrating them into your daily life?
Ope my tip to you would be to just focus on one quote at a time. With this comic courage is the theme. So if you want to be more courageous, how can you practice courage today? How can you practice courage this week? This month? Write down the ways you want to be courageous, get people to hold you accountable then go do them. Be intentional about the areas of life that you want to improve and the changes will come.

Is this the same young woman from “Great People do Things Before They’re Ready?”
Yes, just like Gav said in the comments. (Last paragraph.)
Whoops, missed that last part.
Gavin this is the first comic I’ve ever commented on after being a long time fan 🙂 Aside from the awesome quote I want to compliment you on your skills as an artist and the way you’re pushing yourself. The shadows and textured detail throughout (especially the scenes where the comic is up on stage) are incredible!
Thank you, this is just what I needed right now.
Thank You!!!
I think it’s great!
I would buy this as a print!
Best from

i really like the facial expressions in this one!
This would be a great poster!
A-W-E-SOME!! (The protagonist looks a bit like Amy Poehler 😀 )
New to your site after clicking a FB link on the Ken Robinson quote and totally fell down the rabbit hole of goodness… Thanks for bringing all these quotes together so artfully–they are of course inspiring on their own, but what you add makes them extra wonderful. LOVE the panel right before the comedienne destroys the bully–It reminded me of Amy Poehler before even reading the explanation! Cheers for 2015!
Great comic Gavin! I started stand-up comedy this year, and it really is a “one-step-at-a-time”thing. Keep on rocking!

thanks for sharing this wonderful post~ =D
I like it except for one thing. She responded to a ‘hater’ with hate. I don’t mean that she is a hater, but the ‘bad guy’ said something wrong, and she responded with something equally wrong, and made him cry. Everyone has personal problems and struggles we know nothing about. Repay evil, with good. Be kind. Try to understand. Words have power, and we can crush a person with them, or restore their soul. Become the change you wish to see in the world. Peace.
Right on – that’s the same thought I had when reading the comic. It would make more of an impact if the mean guy ended up laughing – with everyone else – than if he ended up crying and being laughed at. The current ending perpetuates the isolation of meanness, which fuels tyranny, and suggests that power comes from belittling others instead of from empathizing with them. I don’t believe that Eleanor would have been comfortable with that message, considering her tireless work on behalf of the well being of others, and her compassionate stance towards human culpability.
Otherwise I think the comic is well done, and supports an ongoing conversation about potential – especially artistic potential – that each of these comics participates in. I think an opportunity was lost with this quote, however, in that a performance oriented topic limits the scope of the message (or not? On the fence about that, now that I’ve written it). I can’t help feeling like an Eleanor Roosevelt quote begs for a rendering that’s as broadly applicable and as communal as possible. She’s monumental. I admire Amy Poehler, but having read her book and found it strangely shallow, this subject matter also strikes me as not going far enough.
Love the art in this one! especially that panel near the ending, where she is mocking the bald guy who yelled at her. Her expression is pure sarcasm! It’s perfect!
Standing in front of so many people has to be the most difficult thing to do. But its easier to please a larger crown then a smaller one.. Great story.
I really like this comic because toxic people when they act with malice and harsh intent should be humiliated. And the simpler the better. Harsh behavior like that should be snuffed out with sarcasm. Because satire and sarcasm are teaching experiences that are empowering for the person being afflicted & takes all the power out of the perpetrator. Also it is a learning experience for the perp, because it is a FINE reminder of just how vulnerable they really are- and for superficial reasons how much stock they put in them selves when it is false.
Having the courage to start something new and stick to it can be very daunting indeed. It really does take practise and a lot of persistence to succeed in what you set out to do.
If you were a little confused as I was about how Eleanor could have Teddy as her uncle, she was born Anne Eleanor Roosevelt and she married her fifth cousin once removed Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Je suis Charlie. Hope Zen Pencils will provide a suitable illustration on the subject.
This guy just shit on me in CS:GO, and I just want to say that he’s a faggot hacker cunt, and though technically he wins, because im here right now. Fuck you.
“We do not have to be heroes overnight.”
Thank you. Sometimes the word of critiques cripples me for days. The thought that it should not be perfect at all times like this helps me to build myself better.
Hey, just a heads up, it’s Louis C.K, not Louie C.K
I *NEED* this as a poster, Gavin. NEED. <3
Great work on this topic. 🙂

Would that bullies were so easily defeated!
HAHAHAHA Very nice my bro
Really? the quote is good “Seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared.”.
But the lady does the same thing to the hater, she makes everyone laugh at him so he feels bad about himself just like she felt in the beginning.
Is this a case where the strongest wins? or should it be we’re all in it together?

Most of the time spent wrestling with technologies that don’t quite work yet is just not worth it for end users, however much fun it is for nerds.
The way to solve the conflict between human values and technology needs is not to run away from technology. That’s impossible. The way to resolve the conflict is to break down the barriers of dualistic thought that prevent a real understanding of what technology is–not an exploitation of nature, but a fusion of nature and the human spirit into a new kind of creation that transcends both.
