LaPier tallies first goal of the season

Sept. 17, 2014

It didn't take long for the Red Dragons to jump on the host Engineers. Senior captain Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded the game's first shot early in the fifth minute sandwiched between a trio of RPI fouls. The Red and White kept the pressure on, and it paid off. Rookie Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) fired a shot off the crossbar, from which Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) collected the rebound and crashed into the net giving Oneonta the 1-0 advantage. Oneonta goalkeeper Rory Stark did not face her first test until the 16th minute; she was up to the task making the save.

The Red Dragons put the pressure on once again in the 26th and 27th minutes as LaPier and Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) each fired shot high within 45 seconds of each other. The Red and White threw seven shots on goal in the first stanza, three of which were on target. LaPier led the way with three total shots, two on goal, including her first goal of the season.

Coming out of the half, Oneonta continued putting pressure on the Engineers. Glowa had a shot blocked and Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) was denied in the first five minutes of the half, Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) added a blocked header minutes later. Following an onslaught of subs over the next 10 minutes, RPI knotted the game at one on a header off a corner kick. Neither team could regain an advantage sending the contest to overtime.

The first overtime period saw a strong late push from the Engineers as they registered the only four shots of the 10 minute session. The Red Dragon defense stood strong not allowing any of them to be on cage. The Red Dragons first shot on goal in extra time came seven and a half minute into the second overtime when Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) was stopped by the Engineer keeper. After not being able to capitalize on a late corner, the Red and White played to a tie.

Oneonta (1-4-1) is back in action Saturday afternoon they cross the state line to take on the Gators of Allegheny in Meadville, Pa in a 1 p.m. contest.
