Social Southie, a new group created by and for South Boston residents interested in changing Southie’s social scene, held its first event Tuesday. The gathering at Boston Beer Garden on East Broadway was a benefit for the South Boston-based Alliance for Animals. Scott Luther, one of the group’s cofounders, told us the aim is to offer an alternative to what’s likely to be portrayed as part of the new reality show “Southie Rules,” which premieres Jan. 29 on A&E. “That’s a locals-against-yuppies thing,” said Luther. “We saw what ‘Jersey Shore’ did for Seaside Heights. I’m hoping ‘Southie Rules’ doesn’t do the same thing for Southie.” He said each gathering of Social Southie will benefit a different South Boston nonprofit.
