Lately, there has been a bunch of fuss concerning the area of politics.  There are some who really hate who the President is, and others love him.  Congressional trustworthiness is at an all time low.  Politics in general has divided our nation in such a manner whose likes hasn’t been seen seen since the Civil War.  With this in mind, I thought it pertinent to remind us of some guiding principles from Word of God.

First, like it or not, it was God who has ordained our current governing body.  That inclusive of the current President, each congressional member and judicial official.  Scripture says, “Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.” (Romans13:1-2)  Whereas one might disagree with the current administration, it doesn’t give the right to throw a temper tantrum and break the law because they don’t like the results of the recent election.  To do so, is to rebellion and complain against that which God has ordained, and that didn’t go so well for the children of Israel in the past nor will it bear well today.

Second, we must govern our lives by the Golden Rule. “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)  The lack of civility at has recently erupted in society, is in direct contrast of our Lord’s teaching.  In fact, it is sinful behavior, and as such, it will condemn one’s soul to a devil’s hell unless it is repented of.  Christ said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)  Anyone who claims to love the Lord and yet fails to govern their life by the Golden Rule is nothing more than a hypocrite who vainly wears the title of a Christian.

The heart of the matter is not whether or not we agree with the government.  If we disagree with the direction our elected officials are taking us, then under our current former of government we can work toward changing it.  At the heart of the matter is how we as individuals govern our own lives.  We can either govern it according to precepts established in God’s Word or we can be tossed around by our feelings and desires.  “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) –ottp
