WEST RIDGE — In one of its biggest performances of the year, West Ridge dance company Performing Arts Limited unites students from 28 area schools to impress audiences with "The Nutcracker."
On Black Friday, nearly 50 dancers from Chicago and suburban schools will be joined by professional dancers Wade Tischhauser and Andrew Hodson of Lyric Opera to perform the holiday classic at Christkindlmarket downtown.
The dance company was founded in West Ridge 15 years ago by performer Kate Kinyon, and it will perform "The Nutcracker" this year for the ninth time.
"The Nutcracker" shows first began as intimate performances but quickly evolved into the company's second biggest annual show, Kinyon said.
It's become a show that helps dancers "grow" while giving students who might not usually have an opportunity to meet a chance to become friends.
At a recent rehearsal, the studio at 2740 W. Touhy Ave. was buzzing with excited energy as dancers, parents and Kinyon meticulously focused on each passing step.
Performing Arts Limited takes the stage at Christkindlmarket from noon-1 p.m. Nov. 27.
The group will also perform shows at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 and 6. at Northside College Prep High School, 5501 N. Kedzie Ave.. A special Nutcracker Tea will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 5 before the performance. Tickets are $8-$35 and discounts are available for groups.
