Why this petition matters

Started by Nevena Spirovska

Constructed in 1926, the Princess Mary Club is a culturally and historically significant part of Melbourne's heritage. It is a rare surviving example of a 1920s hostel which was created for young women coming to work and study in the city, enabling a greater inclusion of women in Victoria's workforce.

Tragically, the Uniting Church, the current owners of the site, have partnered with Leighton Properties, which will see the developer handed prime Lonsdale Street land bought by the church through philanthropic donations in the 1920s. Leighton Properties are proposing to build a 33 level building which would mean the demolition of the Princess Mary Club.

The original development plan on the site was rejected in 2011 by Planning Minister, Justin Madden. The proposed development is now 50% greater in terms of height alone and is predicated upon the destruction of this remarkable icon of Melbourne's history.

The Wesley Historic Precinct Action Group and Fiona Patten MLC are working together to present a counter-proposal for the site which would save the Princess Mary Club.

Please sign below to show your support and save this rare icon from destruction.
