It seems pointless to ask if there’s room for one more as thousands of Muslim pilgrims swarm over passenger trains .

The devotees were among millions who had flocked to the opening phase of the World Muslim Congregation – also known as Biswa Ijtema – at Tongi, north of capital Dhaka in Bangladesh.

Britain’s crowded rush-hour trains pale into insignificance as hundreds of thousands of worshippers put their lives at risk by piling on top of the moving train.

But pilgrims looking to reserve seats on the rail may have been disappointed.

Every inch of the engine, carriages, roofs and even steps were used.

During the religious event at the Turag river in the Gazipur district Muslims focus on their devotion - and are banned from any political discussions.

The two-stage event is second only in size to the Hajj and its next three-day phase starts on Friday.

Around five million Muslims from up to 150 countries attend, with the main congregation taking place in an area just 0.65 square km in size.

Participants camp there for three days to pray and receive blessings from Allah.
