Wildcats Race Past Griffins Behind Deadly Fast Break

1/29/2015 9:44:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/29/2015) – Wilmington University (Del.) pushed the tempo of tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest against Chestnut Hill College every chance it got. The Wildcats' breakneck pace paid dividends to the tune of a 20-2 advantage in fast-break points, enough to secure a 75-67 victory inside Sorgenti Arena. Senior forward Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) went off for career highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds, but her fifth consecutive double-double ultimately was not enough to stem the tide.

In a first half that featured three ties and eight lead changes, Chestnut Hill College (5-13, 3-8) went ahead for the last time, 19-18, on a layup by Turner with 6:26 to play in the period. Senior guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to push the spread to 25-18 (5:19), and classmate Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) answered a layup by Wilmington University (5-15, 3-9) with one of her own to make it 27-20. That's when the wheels fell off for the Griffins, who watched the visiting Wildcats take control with a 17-2 run over the final 4:17. Turner (14 points and seven rebounds), and Gorcyznski (11 points) carried the load for Chestnut Hill College, but had little help as the visitors took a 37-29 advantage into the break.

The Griffins made several runs in the second half, the most exhilarating of which saw senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) lead the charge. Felder, who scored 15 of her 17 points after halftime, scored eight straight points before capping a 14-2 spurt with a 3-pointer that cut the Wilmington University lead to 57-54 with 6:37 to play. Unfortunately, the Wildcats had a response for each Chestnut Hill College charge. Senior guard Taylor Carter (Edgewood, Md.) and sophomore guard Zameria Jones (Joppa, Md.) sandwiched three-point plays around a bucket by Felder, with Jones' giving Wilmington University a 63-56 cushion at the 4:52 mark. The Wildcats pushed it to 67-57 with 3:42 to play before the Griffins closed to within 71-67 on a layup by Felder (1:18). But Chestnut Hill College would not score again, and Wilmington University made four free throws to provide the final margin.

Junior guard Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.) led Wilmington University with 17 points and Jones provided 15. Sophomore guard Jasmine Lee (Chestertown, Md.) finished with 12 and senior guard Cari Callaway (Newark, Del.) chipped in 10. Senior forward Jennifer Carr (Federalsburg, Md.) offered eight points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists, and Carter collected nine markers.

Turner finished with the most rebounds by a Griffin in a single game since Andrea Carter collected 17 caroms against Cazenovia College in the 2006-2007 season finale. She was 6-of-12 (50%) from the field and 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the foul line. Gorczynski posted 18 points on 6-of-11 (54.5%) shooting and a 4-of-6 (66.7%) showing from beyond the arc five days removed from scoring her 1,000th career point in an 81-49 rout of Concordia College (NY). Felder made six of eight field-goal attempts in the second half and added four assists and two steals.

The Griffins hit the road for a 2:00 p.m. CACC contest against Dominican College (NY) on Saturday, January 31.
