Gahanna homesGahanna is a charming community of about 33,000 residents, located 9 miles northeast of downtown Columbus, situated within Jefferson Township in Franklin County. It is conveniently located near I-670 and I-270, and is only five minutes from Port Columbus International Airport.

Gahanna is best known as the “Herb Capital of Ohio” due to its lush herb gardens and green-minded tourism. It was named as Ohio Magazine’s “Best Hometown” in 2013 and 2014. Gahanna was also listed among the “Top 100 Places to Live” by Money Magazine in 2007. Historic downtown Gahanna, also known as The Olde Gahanna District, features brick-paved sidewalks, museums, unique shops and popular restaurants.

Some of Gahanna’s shops and restaurants draw loyal followers from near and far. The Koko Tea Salon and Bakery features delicious gluten-free cupcakes with artistic frosting. Their organic pastries are made with locally-sourced ingredients, flavored and colored with natural fruits and berries. You’ll also want to visit The Gahanna Grill, a landmark restaurant that’s been a local favorite since 1939. Their famous “Beanie Burger” put them on the list of the “Top 100 Burger Joints in America.”

Gahanna’s downtown revival is credited to the clean-up of Big Walnut Creek and development of the Olde Gahanna Business Center and Plaza. The Plaza hosts community events and attractions from May through October. Adjacent to the Plaza is Creekside Park, which provides a scenic backdrop for popular events like the Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival.

Creekside Park offers walking and biking paths, paddleboats and fishing in Big Walnut Creek. Creekside Park is one of 49 public green spaces totaling 775 acres in Gahanna. The Gahanna Department of Parks & Recreation manages 26 public parks and facilities, including a skate park, a dog park, a nature preserve, three athletic parks and four multi-use community parks.

Gahanna maintains a small-town feel while providing big-city amenities. The rural atmosphere surrounding Gahanna is possible due to Jefferson Township’s aggressive land conservation polices. Jefferson Township employs a land use strategy called performance zoning, which allows higher density development in unobtrusive areas, in exchange for retention of premium open space. The zoning category most popular with developers requires a minimum of 35% open space – higher than most other communities in central Ohio.

Schools in Gahanna are well-respected. Public education in Gahanna is provided by the Gahanna-Jefferson Public School District. The school system received an “excellent” rating by the Ohio Department of Education in 2011–2012. Gahanna has seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and Lincoln High School. Lincoln High School received a 2014 Silver Award by US News & World Report.
