Exceptional engineering athletes
Buckeye engineering student-athletes were recognized for exceptional athletic and academic performance with numerous awards this past month.
At the Big Ten Conference on March 26, seven winter sports student-athletes from the College of Engineering were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team.
- Men’s swimming and diving: Alex Miller, chemical engineering; Tyler Stevenson, mechanical engineering, David Stone, welding engineering; John Zucca, electrical and computer engineering
- Women’s swimming and diving: Rachel Dzierzak, architecture
- Wrestling: Ray Gordon, electrical and computer engineering; Randy Languis, materials science engineering
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Berta-Naoko Queralt O’Callaghan, architecture major on the field hockey team, was named a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor. This year is the 100th anniversary of the conference’s most exclusive award, won by just 24 student-athletes annually.
At the 47th Annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner in the Ohio Union Monday, 37 engineering and architecture students were named 2013-14 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes.
