Men's Golf In Eighth Place After Day 1 Of Gordin Classic

The St. John Fisher College men's golf team is in eighth place at +29 after two rounds at the Gordin Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Fisher, ranked 11th nationally, shot 605 over 36 holes on Monday. The tournament continues with an 8:30 a.m. start on Tuesday with 18 holes at Columbus Country Club, the oldest golf club in central Ohio and the site of the 1964 PGA Championship.

Hosted annually by Ohio Wesleyan University since 1991, the Gordin Classic brings together 12 of the best NCAA Division III teams, including most, if not all, of the top-10 finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III Championship.

The Gordin Collegiate Classic field includes eight of the top-10 teams from the 2014 NCAA Division III tournament, including Oglethorpe University (Ga.), the 2014 NCAA Division III runner-up. Methodist (N.C.), which finished fourth; Wittenberg, which finished fifth; Fisher and University of La Verne (Calif.), tied for sixth; in addition to Transylvania University (Ky.), Berry College and LaGrange College (Ga.), which rounded out the top 10, are also competing.

Joining those teams are Guilford College (N.C), Rhodes College (Tenn.), Concordia (Texas), Southwestern University (Texas) and host Ohio Wesleyan.

The tournament is named after longtime Ohio Wesleyan coach Dick Gordin. Gordin, who served as the Bishops' golf coach from 1955-93, guided 22 of his last 25 teams to the NCAA Division III or College Division tournaments, bringing home six top-5 finishes in his last eight years, including runner-up finishes in 1990 and 1993 and third place in 1989 and 1991. Ohio Wesleyan won a total of 12 league titles in five different decades under Gordin. His teams won seven Ohio Athletic Conference championships and five North Coast Athletic Conference crowns. Gordin was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1993.
