A United spokesperson said: “There was a need to increase the number of flights and the size of the aircraft to San Juan to accommodate an increase in our handling of temperature-controlled shipments to Puerto Rico’s pharmaceutical and other companies.”

The additional five flights mean a far larger seat allocation for tourists and the same spokesperson revealed that United are confident they can fill the space.

Millie Uriarte, United’s regional director of sales for Puerto Rico, said: “This announcement is just the beginning, and we look forward to continuing to do business with customers throughout the island.”

In addition to the upgraded services to San Juan, United are also set to launch a new service to Cuba from November 29, with a daily flight from Newark to Havana. A Saturday service from Houston will also begin on December 3. Both flights are year round.
