The move comes amidst continued reports of violence and contravention of electoral laws by some of the campaigning candidates.

Kiggundu highlighted such scenes as in Mukono yesterday where NRM supporters were seen on streets during candidate Amama Mbabazi’s rally, noting that holding parallel events would not be allowed.

He also pointed out the incident in Ssembabule last weekend, where one of Mbabazi’s agents was assaulted by unknown people, and his car torched together with campaign materials.

“We strongly condemn such incidents and call upon police to immediately launch investigations into this particular matter,” he added.

Candidates using foul language and those carrying on with rallies beyond the set time [6PM] were also warned by the EC boss.

Meanwhile, following yesterday’s move by government to eliminate universal suffrage during the election of the Kampala Lord Mayor, The EC has also halted the nomination of candidates for the said position pending clarification from the executive.

Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, who is also the leader of Government business on Tuesday tabled before parliament the Kampala Capital City Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2015, seeking a change in the mode of electing the Lord Mayor. The bill proposes that the mayor should be elected by City Councilors instead.

“Please note that nomination for Kampala Capital City Authority’s Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor shall only take place after the Minister in charge of Kampala has availed to the Electoral Commission with the regulations for the entire electoral exercise under the KCCA Act,” revealed Kiggundu.
