THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2014) – The Maritime women's volleyball team defeated visiting King's College of New York in straight sets on Wednesday night in home. Despite the sweep, the score differential of each set was only two points, as two of the sets went to extra points (26-24, 25-23, 26-24). The Privateers improve to 6-6 overall on the season, while the Lions fall to 5-7.

Freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) recorded a match-high 15 kills for Maritime and also picked up a double-double with 16 digs. Defensively, senior libero Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) led the team with 19 digs, while freshman Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) registered 14 digs. Senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) lent a hand with 16 assists and recently-named Skyline weekly honor roll honoree sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had 14 helpers.

With Maritime in front 14-10 in the first set, King's went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-16. The Privateers responded with three straight points, all via Lion attack errors to tie the set up at 19-all. After its own attack error, Maritime got kills by Lombaro and Brady to take a 21-20 lead, forcing the Lions to call the first timeout of the set. After the break, the Privateers got ahead to a 24-22 lead thanks to a service error, attack error and a kill by Brady. King's answered with two straight to tie the score at 24-all, but Maritime went on to win the set on two straight attack errors.

In the second set, the Privateers built up an 11-7 lead, as Kempski led the way with three kills during the run. King's began to chip away at the lead, however, eventually tying the score at 16-16 before taking a one point lead, capping off a 10-5 run. Maritime kept with it, scoring three straight to go up 19-17. King's kept up the trend of the night of swinging momentum, taking four of the next five points to take a 21-20 lead, but the Privateers responded in the exact same fashion, with four of five to go up 24-22. After a Maritime service error, the set ended with a King's service error.

Not to be outdone, the third set provided much of the same – Maritime jumping out to a 14-7 lead; the Lions responding with a 10-1 run to go up 17-15; the Privateers jumping out ahead, 24-20, after a 9-3 run; and King's scoring four straight to tie it at 24. A kill by McCormack and a Lion attack error ended the set in favor of the Privateers, 26-24, as they earned the sweep in the match.

For the Lions, freshman Kelli O'Donnell led the way with 13 kills and also had a double-double, adding 10 digs. Freshman Dekka Hunley led all players in the match with 24 digs, while junior Jesse Schnoebelen recorded a match-high 17 assists.
