A SAFE haven for cats is to close its doors for three months to allow its largest revamp in 20 years to take place.

The York Cats Protection Adoption Centre’s refurbishment will begin in mid-April to make sure the branch is able to meet the many needs of unwanted cats and kittens in North Yorkshire.

Donations have flooded into the Huntington Road centre to fund the work, which will see its current wooden sheds and pens replaced with purpose-built buildings and UPVC pens respectively.

The new pens will also be designed to stimulate and engage the cats more.

James Hodgkison, adoption centre manager, said: “We’ve helped to re-home over 100 cats and kittens already this year – but with ever increasing demand on our services we need to ensure our centre continues to offer the best quality of care.

“The new-look centre will ensure we can continue to meet the needs of unwanted cats and kittens of York, and the surrounding area, for the generations to come.

“We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has, and continues to, generously donate towards the centre.

“Without them this wouldn’t be possible.”

The branch is also set to spend this time making essential repairs to other existing cat pens to both extend their lifespan and to make improvements for cat welfare.

Cats not rehomed before the closure will be transferred to other Cats Protection Adoption Centres.

However, the centre is particularly keen to find their longest-staying resident, feline Florence, a new home before then.

Flo has been in the care of the centre for more than five months and is still looking for a sympathetic home to take her in.

She is older, with a special diet, but is friendly and would rather be in a quiet home where she can enjoy sitting on a lap or two.

Although the branch itself will be temporarily closed, the York Cats Protection will still be offering support and advice during the renovations through its local helpline on 01904 760356.
