The aircraft will operate until Friday, 15 May, and will involve day and night flying until 10.30pm. All aircraft are operating at least 4500 metres above sea level.
Commander Air Combat Group, Air Commodore Steve Roberton said the FCI participants were in the final stage of a five month intensive course which involved combined exercises with F/A-18F Super Hornets from RAAF Base Amberley, near Brisbane and F/A-18 Hornet aircraft from RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle.
“Up to 18 aircraft may be involved in these exercises, of which the major part will be conducted further off the coast, however northern NSW residents may notice aircraft activity this week,” he said.
AIRCDRE Roberton said the majority of the course was conducted in over water areas east of RAAF Base Williamtown, however this phase of the course takes place mid-way between the two bases.
“The FCI Course is Air Force’s means of graduating aircrew capable of the highest level of air tactics development and large force employment,” AIRCDRE Roberton said.
F/A-18 Hornet pilots, F/A-18F Super Hornet pilots, weapon system officers and intelligence officers combine their efforts to ‘defeat’ adversaries - other RAAF Squadrons of experienced aircrew.
The course is also supported by the E-7A Wedgetail from 2 Squadron, RAAF Base Williamtown and the KC-30 Multi-Role Tanker from 33 Squadron RAAF Base Amberley.
Air Force is committed to ensuring every effort is made to minimise any inconvenience to residents, and appreciates the ongoing support from the local communities.
The final stage of the course will be conducted from RAAF bases Darwin and Tindal utilising Delamere and Bradshaw Ranges for Exercise Aces North,..
