Why this petition matters

Started by Gary Stokes

Sharks are threatened globally and therefore as one of the largest global supermarket chains with over 10,000 stores, Carrefour's commitment to remove all shark products will make a huge difference.

I know that Carrefour is familiar with the plight of shark populations globally and their rapid decline over the past 50 years. Some species are now so seriously threatened with extinction that if changes are not put in place fast we may lose them. Your stores in Egypt made the positive decision to stop selling shark, and in your Singapore stores you decided not to sell shark fin soup. These are great decisions but sadly are very isolated.

It’s time for a global giant such as Carrefour to implement a permanent withdrawal of all Shark and Shark Products from your inventory.

This not only includes whole sharks, shark meat and shark fin, but also shark cartilage pills and shark liver health products as well as any product made from shark leather or teeth.

Recently Groupon made the responsible decision to a complete ban of all Shark Products across all 48 countries they operate in.

The picture above of the baby hammerhead sharks on ice was taken just a few days ago in one of your stores in Indonesia.

Three species of Hammerhead were listed at the CITES CoP16 in Bangkok 2013 under Appendix II of the Washington Convention. Even more recently they were listed on the Appendices of the CMS (Convention of Migratory Species).

Whilst it is not illegal to catch and sell (within the country caught) any of the Hammerhead Shark species unless the country has implemented its own domestic laws, I think you can see it is far from your Sustainability Pledge to be selling Baby Hammerheads.

Sharks are thankfully on everyone’s agenda right now, we hope that you can put them on Carrefour’s globally.
