BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the defending WAC Tournament Champion CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 0-3 (19-25, 17-25, 22-25) on Thursday at the Icardo Center.
Sophomore
Bojana Mitrovic led the Vaqueros (8-10, 1-3 WAC) with 14 kills on .314 hitting. Freshman
Alexandra Ecker had eight kills on .500 hitting. Freshman
Dubravka Vukoja recorded 30 assists.
Kelsee Sawyer led the Roadrunners (5-11, 3-1 WAC) with 15 kills on .500 hitting.
Sydney Haynes had 14 kills on .481 hitting with three blocks.
Luiza Martins recorded 41 assists.
The Roadrunners out-hit the Vaqueros .380 (50-9-108) to .302 (38-9-96).
The first set was an offensive affair, with the Roadrunners out-hitting the Vaqueros .469 (17-2-32) to .367 (14-3-30), including an error-free performance by Ecker, who had five kills in eight attacks. Ecker had two of those kills on the first three serves to propel the Vaqueros to a 3-0 lead.
Kortney Freeland had back-to-back kills in the middle of a 4-0 run as the Roadrunners took the lead, but kills by Ecker and junior
Alisha Watson put the Vaqueros back on top. The Vaqueros still led at 10-9 after an Ecker kill, but the Roadrunners responded with a 10-4 run to take a lead they did not relinquish.
The Roadrunners scored the first three points of the second set en route to a 4-1 lead. The Vaqueros pulled within 3-5 on an Ecker kill, 5-7 on an error, and and 7-9 on a Mitrvoic kill. The Roadrunners, however, scored four-straight points as part of a 6-1 run to pull away for a 2-0 lead.
The Vaqueros bounced back by taking the first serve of the third set on a block by senior
Haley Durham, kicking off a back and forth set. The first two-point lead came when the Vaqueros went up 6-4 on a kill by junior
Megan Dempsey, but the next two-point lead didn't come until a Watson kill made it 16-14. The Vaqueros still led by two at 21-19 on an Ecker kill, but the Roadrunners closed the set on a 6-1 run to complete the sweep.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they visit Grand Canyon.
