Detoxification to Optimize Your Health with Marla Feingold

In this episode of The Functional Medicine Radio Show, Dr. Carri’s special guest Marla Feingold talks about detoxification – what it is, how to do it, and how it can optimize your health.

  • The daily bombardment of chemicals and pollutants means that everyone has something to detoxify.
  • Gluten, processed food, corn and the like have many pitfalls and should be avoided.
  • Round-Up Ready Wheat is bad for our gut health and we should avoid this and genetically-modified foods.
  • Glyphosate is the pesticide in Round-Up and acts as an antibiotic so it removes the probiotics from our soil and impacts our gut health.
  • If you’re juicing pesticide-laden produce, the pesticides are going straight to your gut and bloodstream.
  • Strawberries are sprayed with bromide – a flame retardant – and always should be eaten organic because the bromide interferes with iodine and thyroid health.
  • Apples and pears are also highly sprayed with pesticides.
  • Greens like kale, spinach and cabbage are also high in pesticides and if you’re juicing them they should always be organic.
  • Corn is often genetically modified, and can cause inflammation, high blood sugar, and leaky gut.
  • The Dirty Dozen Foods = the fruits and veggies we should absolutely buy organic because they have the highest amounts of pesticides.
  • The Clean Fifteen Foods = the fruits and veggies we don’t have to buy organic because they have the lowest amounts of pesticides.
  • Migraines, headaches, allergies, fibromyalgia, aches and pains, chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, digestive problems, including Crohn’s disease, menstruation disorders, menopausal symptoms are some conditions that shout you need to do a detox ASAP.
  • Signs and symptoms indicating that kids need a detox: anger issues, irritability, behavioral differences, poor concentration, poor focus and sleep issues.
  • Cleanse = dietary modifications like removing harmful foods from your diet and adding in things like juicing.
  • Detoxing = the biochemical process that happens primarily in your liver and kidneys to break down chemicals. There are many different pathways for chemicals to get broken down in your liver, and you can have genetic difficulties in certain pathways and are considered ‘poor detoxifiers’.
  • 14-28 days is a good amount of time to detox.
  • Feeling bad during a detox is common. This can be because some of the toxins are getting reabsorbed. Drinking lots of water helps this, as does having daily bowel movements.
  • Some things you can start doing today: Drink more water, eat healthier foods, stop using dryer sheets, stop using so many chemicals on your body, drink green tea, and use an antioxidant supplement every day.
  • Great antioxidants include N-acetyl-cysteine, vitamin E, Vitamin C, vitamin A, glutathione, and zinc.
