INDEED, the fifth-generation Ford Explorer Sport variant is packaged to be versatile, comfortable and dynamic to indulge almost every driver’s wishful thinking. With a formidable engine, commanding presence, swish interior and long list of features, it stands beyond greatness in the arena of midsized sport-utility vehicles (SUVs).
It may seem straightforward, but its massive build, wide body and lower roof line project an imposing presence, while the signature three-bar grille with mesh in between complements the headlamps pattern. The Explorer badge serves as a distinction for the sport variant. Accentuating the sculpted body is the black plastic trim surrounding the lower panels. The rear highlights and dual exhaust tip chrome finish match the top-mounted spoiler and LED tail lights. Also, the relatively lower stance and exclusive 20-inch aluminum wheels with glossy black accents and engraved marking make the exterior design even more striking.
With the smart keyless entry, all it needs is for your hand to grab the handle to unlock the door. Once you step inside, it is expansive, ergonomic and sophisticated. For an SUV, it has that impression of a luxury car interior, given the ignition push button, power panorama roof, premium materials and two-tone leather-wrapped seats that are contoured to give a snug and comfy seating position. The cockpit layout has controls and switches within reach, including those embedded in the steering wheel with paddle shifters, while the standard knob is positioned closer to the driver. With the MyFord Touch instrument cluster, the display gauges flash vital and real-time information. The center panel houses the eight-inch” LCD touchscreen for audio, devices and other configurations with the main Sony in-dash 21-speaker audio system. As for the rear cabin, every passenger would definitely appreciate not only the leg room but the pampering amenities, too. Apart from the center console air-conditioning controls, 12-volt/110-volt power outlets, roof-mounted air vents and ceiling lights, there are even two headrest video monitors available for entertainment. With enough space, the third row provides the seven-seater SUV with enough cargo space in the back. Accessing the rear cargo is easy via the remote control or button handle that automatically lifts the tailgate. With just a push of a button, the third row folds underneath, forming a platform—several modes are available. In just seconds, the rear becomes a huge cargo area, wherein a relatively tall person would have to step in to reach the far end.
On the road, the Explorer Sport behaved well, demonstrating superb quietness and comfort. With sufficient air vents, the dual electronic automatic temperature control can easily produce a blanket of cold ambiance. During the test drive, the 180-kilometer travel became seamless and stress-free even when it started raining. The only struggle was the inadequate illumination, even with the fog lamps on, specifically on wet asphalt. One projector-type head lamp on each side was not enough to light up the wet roads. On the other hand, superior road brightness stretching on the sides was evident on dry roads.
The Explorer Sport’s powertrain comprises a 3.5-liter V6 Ecoboost engine mated to a six-speed auto transmission. Given the combined power and force ratings, it can easily produce rapid acceleration. Not one, but two forced induction mechanisms were employed to closely duplicate the muscle of a standard V8 engine. You’ll start to feel the jolt from the spooling twin turbos just above the low end range.
Beyond that is an impressive flat torque that will bring you to high speed limits in no time. But the most compelling observation was how the Explorer Sport performed on the 60-km highways involving tight, winding curves with constant ascents. The sport-tuned front and rear suspension proved to be an excellent factor alongside the potent engine. The handling and control were so impressive that it was as if you were driving a compact and light vehicle every time it took a curve.
The quick-steering response proved to be an asset when ascending turns while overtaking vehicles. Noteworthy was how the hill descent control (HDC) helped when going downhill. When engaged, HDC actively applied the brakes to keep the vehicle within the preset speed.
For better stopping ability, four large diameter rotors were utilized with the standard antilock brake system and electronic brake force distribution. This SUV is also equipped with cutting-edge safety features, such as inflatable second-row safety belts, standard front and knee air bags, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, perimeter alarm and tire pressure-monitoring system, among others. Considering the size of the Explorer Sport, the rearview camera with accurate patterns made reversing easier. Not to mention the constant alarms given off by the proximity sensors that help you avoid a collision.
The long highways and out-of-town trips with demanding road conditions are the Explorer Sport’s playground. However, stretching its legs with the amount of power available also requires utmost respect to handle it properly. Clearly, you can go further with the Explorer.
