Women’s Volleyball Blanks Lafayette



EASTON, PA—Visiting NJIT swept to a 3-0 win over Lafayette in women's volleyball action Wednesday evening at Kirby Sports Center.

The Highlanders got back into the win column Wednesday after dropping their previous five matches. They topped the Leopards in the straight sets 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19, improving to 5-13 on the season.

Senior middle Valerie Carroll led the Highlander offense with a match-high 10 kills on 19 swings with three errors for a .368 hitting percentage.  She also added three service aces and two block assists.  Junior outside hitter Danica Vukotic notched nine kills while twin sister Nina Vukotic and senior Fran Edmondson added eight kills apiece in the victory.  Edmondson recorded four total blocks (three assist, one solo).

Freshman setter Alyssa Armada recorded a match-best 35 assists,while Edmondson led the Highlanders defensively with a team-high 13 digs.  Senior libero Camilla Tinari combined for nine digs followed by Danica Vukotic's seven.

NJIT held a 10-to-2 advantage in service aces led by Carroll and Katie Goswick with three apiece.

For Lafayette, who falls to 4-12 on the season, Danielle Towslee and Elizabeth Walsh recorded a team-best eight kills followed by Jet Manzi, who contributed seven.  Setter Tori Smith piled up 13 assists and libero Lauren Pisauro dug-up a match-high 14 digs followed by 10 from Manzi.

In the first frame, Lafayette jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Highlanders answered with a 4-1 run pulling within one, 6-5, on a Leopard attack error.  After a kill by Lafayette's Walsh, the Highlanders scored the next four points knotting the set at 8, on a service ace by Edmondson. 

The set would see four more ties, the final at 13-13, after the Highlanders pulled ahead by three, 16-13.  Lafayette cut the lead to one, 16-15, but the visitors responded with a run of their own, taking a 20-17 advantage.  Lafayette rallied back to within one, 21-20, after block assists by Towslee and Katy Rooney but it wouldn't be enough as the Highlanders scored the final four points of the frame taking a 25-20 victory.

In the second frame, NJIT took an early 6-2 lead and later pushed its margin to 10, 15-5, on a kill by Carroll.  Lafayette scored the next five consecutive points. closing the Highlander gap to six, 15-9.  After a timeout by the Highlanders, NJIT increased its lead to eight, 20-12, on a kill by Carroll.  Lafayette battled back and cut the deficit to single-digits, 23-20, on an NJIT attack error but the Highlanders scored the final two points of the frame for a 25-20 win.

Lafayette scored the opening four points of the third set, resulting in an early NJIT timeout.  The Highlanders scored the next two points but the Leopards would increase its lead to five, 7-2.  NJIT down but not out, went on an 8-1 run taking its first lead of the frame, 10-8 on a service ace by Goswick. 

Both teams went back-and-forth in the early teens and saw its final tie of the frame, 14-14, on a kill by NJIT's Edmondson.  The Highlanders went on a 7-2 run extending its lead to five, 21-16, on a block assist by Carroll and Edmondson and never looked back closing out the set 25-19 on a kill by Nina Vukotic.

NJIT will have a quick turnaround and visit Delaware State on Friday, October 3 at 7pm.
