Let the drone debate commence! Drones are all the rage these days, but they don’t come without controversy. Many folks have criticized the use of drones, while others froth on the insane footage they produce. But one man in northern Washington state just received the harshest condemnation of all: a ticket.

According to Washington state law, “vessels” and “other objects” must stay away 200 yards away from local killer whales. Vague wording never applied so well. Footage from the flying “vessel” shows a pack of orcas cruising along in crystal clear water, as shown on the local news. The resulting fine was $1,025. Perhaps this is the beginning of a slippery slope when it comes to the environmental argument against drone photography.
