 Alice's Notions reviews are starting to pour in and most of them are five stars. Here are a few.
Alice simply wants to get on with her life after her husband is killed during the war. She moves home but doesn’t want to be a burden to her brother and his wife, Alice’s best friend, so Alice opens a fabric and sewing business.
As the back cover says, things aren’t always what they seem. A broody landlord and a neighbor’s happy-go-lucky nephew both want to date her, but it’s obvious there are schemes afoot…Alice just doesn’t know how seriously to play the game, or what’s at stake. In doing a good deed by sponsoring a war refugee, a German woman who needs a fresh start, Alice gets a lesson in compassion and humility, and the truth about one’s enemies. When a community celebration including a barn quilt tour begins to skew off track, Alice needs help to learn why. Best friend? Brother? Broody landlord with a mysterious life? Happy-go-lucky security guard?
Alice Brighton came home again to learn more about what she was capable of becoming than all her years away in the big city, working in a factory and waiting for her husband to return. Life, faith, dreams, and love, not to mention playing a role in a little case of national security, are too good to let pass.
The story of an era in small-town USA post WWII and on the cusp of the Cold War was an enjoyable project. I researched and helped with part of the story, and Tamera used her home-grown family setting as well as the pop culture references which add layers of lovely texture to the story. - Lisa J. Lickel
In this Cold War spy thriller romance taking place in a cozy quaint mountain town, things aren't always what they seem. A World War 2 widow, Alice Brighton, returns to the safety of her home town to open a fabric shop. She Plans a barn quilt tour to bring business to the shop and the town, not knowing sinister forces are using the tour for their own nefarious reasons. Between her mysterious landlord, her German immigrant employee, her neighbors who are acting strange, and a dreamboat security expert trying to romance her, Alice doesn't know who she can trust. The characters are strong and the plot is well written. - Joyful
A story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Mystery, intrigue and secret spying are all involved in a small town. Alice has to decide who she can trust and who to worry about. Alice finds out profound revelations about her parents and her husband, amidst the opening of her fabric shop and barn quilt tour. A wonderful story. - Melissa Henderson
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is a post WWII story that follows Alice, a widow that lost her husband in the war, as she attempts to go on with her life after the war has ended and finds herself in the middle of events with lots of mystery, intrigue and suspense, and leaves her not knowing who she can believe or trust. I was pulled into the story from the first pages, and this was one that I couldn't put down because I had to see what could possibly happen next. The author certainly kept me guessing until the final pages. - Ann Ellison
