THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team defeated the John Jay Bloodhounds on Wednesday evening by the score of 1-0 on Reinhart Field.

Freshman Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) connected on her fifth goal of the season in the 61st minute for the lone goal of the match for the Privateers. In goal, junior Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) had a relatively quiet night as she picked up the win and her fourth shutout of the year with three saves.

Woods had Maritime's first chance of the evening in the seventh minute of play as she made her way down the wing and took a shot along the end line that sailed over the crossbar. Junior Jori Cooper (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Central Rural) also had a solid chance in the opening half as she sent a strong shot towards the top right corner of the goal that also sailed just over the crossbar.

Neither side was unable to muster much offense in the opening 45 minutes, as the score remained at 0-0 into the halftime break.

In the 55th minute of play, Maritime was awarded a free kick from a prime position as sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) lined up from straightaway in front of the net. The shot was towards the top of the goal, but the John Jay netminder stretched up to pluck the ball out of the air to keep the game scoreless.

Several minutes later the Privateers broke through as Woods made her way down the sideline while working around several Bloodhound defenders then made her way along to end line and sent a rising shot across the goal mouth, tucking it just inside the left post to put Maritime up by a 1-0 score.

Senior Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) missed a chance to put the Privateers up by two as the defender took a shot from the left wing and pushed the ball just wide of the left post. Several minutes later, Maritime missed out on yet another chance as junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) sent a corner kick into the box that was flicked backwards by the head of freshman Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), the ball then bounced to Woods, who then sent the shot just over the crossbar once again.

The Bloodhounds made a late push as John Jay looked to even up the score at one, as the team pulled the trigger on a pair of shots and also took a corner kick in the final four minutes. Both Bloodhound shots were blocked by the Privateer defense, as Maritime held off the surge for the 1-0 victory.

Final stats saw Maritime outshoot its guests by a 10-7 margin, with corner kicks also in favor of the Privateers at a 7-3 margin. Saves were even as Hoar picked up three in the win to earn her fifth of the season, while taking the loss was Kelli Doherty, who also made three stops.

Maritime (5-5-1, 1-1 Skyline) will resume play in one week as the team will start up Skyline Conference play once again with a matchup against St. Joseph's on October 8 at 7 p.m. John Jay (1-8-0, 0-2 CUNAYC) will pick up league play as well when the team travels to Staten Island to take on the Dolphins this Saturday at 12 p.m.
