Virginia Astley wins South Bank Poetry Competition

South Bank Poetry Magazine Poetry Society Member Virginia Astley, who was also commended this month in the Elmet Poetry Prize, has won this year’s South Bank Poetry Competition, judged by Mimi Khalvati. In 2nd place was David Swann and 3rd was Joan Byrne.

Good news, too, for Virginia’s fellow Poetry Society Members. Andrew Geary was 4th, Brian Docherty 5th, and among the commendations were Jude Rosen, Janine Booth, Sarah Gibbons, and Alwyn Marriage.

The annual competition is for ‘London’ themed poems. The first prize is £300, 2nd £150, 3rd receives South Bank Poetry Membership (worth £50), 4th a two year subscription to South Bank Poetry magazine, 5th a one year magazine subscription.

The commended poets will have their poems published in SBP, along with the prize winners. The rest of the poems longlisted by Mimi will be considered for inclusion by the editors in the special London poems competition anthology.
