DUTIES: Critical Project and office support. We rely on you for support for many exciting Greenhorns initiatives. Support includes running the office, outreach, communications, publications coordination/publishing, proof-reading, correspondence with authors/graphic designers/conference attendees/ speakers/ airlines, project management. Our programming is diverse, ambitious and involves logistics. Mostly it falls into 2 categories: Events and Media Production.

In the media category: You will help produce our weekly radio show on Heritage Radio Network, various guidebooks, essays and audio collections, reports/studies that we commission, our odd-year New Farmers Almanac, ongoing production of recruitment posters, and an open-source map database of young farmer resources, Our Land Film post-production, fundraising, touring French open source technologists around New England, tabling at conferences to promote Kiva Zip loans for farmers, Editing the 2015 New Farmers Almanac, and all the coordination. We still sell screenings and DVDs of our own documentary, The Greenhorns, and have started promoting a whole festival of other young farmer films that we bundled together called Up Up Farm. Plus! An active blog and attendant social media hoopla.

In the event category: You help coordinate and execute Farmer mixers, the Vermont Sail Freight project, Seed Circus events at museums, Farm Hack events, Agrarian Trust conferences and symposia and workshops. There is also a futurist/community history project about the Grange movement with upcoming tour in Southern California. Our events are often quite elaborate, with many decorations and ephemeral infrastructures/tents and artists and crafts-people in residence who make these things but must be tended to. 

Research and writing. We need you to write both transactional and expository copy. We need you to think clearly and positively about the character and landscape of the farm economy we are working towards-- to have a knack for easy, fluid rhetoric.

Library, technical support, and office management: We have a large agricultural library to tend and keep organized. We have digital and theatrical equipment to manage, as well as a merchandise and publications sales, mail, supplies, and other business. 

Business: This job includes managing receipts and budgets including disbursements and payroll (max 3 hours per week if you get it down to a routine). You will need to anticipate a significant amount of administrative work in service to an organization that is itself in service to a movement of people who work outside, have rosy cheeks and are often time-stressed. 

We are moving. You will help will oversee the move to, and fixing up of, the new Greenhorns headquarters, library, and farmstead 6 miles down the road.

Director Assistance: We have a director to tend: Severine v T Fleming is founder of Greenhorns – she is working on films and a book and launching a new organization, Agrarian Trust, so she needs day to day help.

QUALIFICATIONS:To flourish in this job you will need to love organizing, list-making, managing workflows adapting to and setting up coordination systems, having clear communication with many different working styles and relationships.We especially need someone who is ready to build and revise workable, digital organizational systems and structures, to manage information from our many talented contribituors worldwide. You must be sturdy, trustworthy, sensible, self-disciplined and of a sunny disposition. We need you to be kind and welcoming to all young farmers in our network and external to it.

A background in sustainable agriculture or food-systems is most useful, as is enthusiasm, strong study skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and organizing experience. You should be able to sleep happily anywhere. You will always eat like a king.

Also useful would be any digital skills: Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut, Mailchimp, Filemaker Pro, Indesign, Google Docs, Wordpress, Drupal, etc. On occasion you will also have to dress nicely, act professionally and manage conference situations with authors, funders, writers, academics.

This position provides insight into every element of the Greenhorns grassroots organizing, independent media production, sustainable agriculture advocacy, and living off the land. This is a great time to be involved. 

OFFICE ENVIRONMENT: This job comes with some flexible hours, it means some traveling to events, some staying at home and keeping up with backend and coordination. The office is very nice and everyone gets their own desk, access to the kitchen, garden, bikes and lake. Usually there are 2-3 part-timers working for Greenhorns, joined by a larger number of remote volunteers to run various parts of the ship, writing publications, producing radio, shooting video, editing almanac etc. More information below.
