A word from one of our sponsors and friend. Please consider being a part of this. Chris will double your community service hours.
Dear volunteers,
I know it’s short notice, but it’s happening.
After three false starts averted by fire and weather, we’re ready to
haul some beams to rebuild the Clear Creek Bridge. First and foremost,
please let me know if you will be attending and where you’ll be meeting
us, whether it’s at the trailhead or a rendezvous point. Here is the
skinny:
Before you read anymore, please fill out this one time volunteer registration (click here) if you haven’t done so before. This helps us keep number straight and includes important info like emergency contacts.
You can help Friday, March 30 and/or Saturday, March 31.
All you have to do is show up to one of the rendezvous (below). We need
help hauling very heavy beams (170lbs) to Clear Creek Bridge on the
Illinois River Trail. You should be in strong physical shape and eager
for an acute challenge that will leave your muscles sore and make for
some good sleep and good karma.
Tomorrow, Friday, March 30, the van leaves Ashland, Ore. at 5:30am, Medford at 6am, Grants Pass at 6:30am, and Selma’s Siskiyou Field Institute at 7am.
From there we’ll drive about an hour west to the Illinois River
Trailhead at Briggs Creek Campground and spend the entire day hauling
materials.
In all likelihood, we’ll be hiking in 20 foot beams
about 4.2 miles. There is a slight possibility we will walk about 5.5
miles with no load to a where materials would be dropped off on the
Illinois River by boat, then hike the materials about one mile back up
to the bridge.
In any event, we’ll be back to the trailhead by 7pm
with burgers waiting courtesy trail angel Tor Mason who has offered to
cook dinner. If you have diet restrictions, please bring your own
dinner.
Other than Friday dinner, you’re on your own for meals. So bring plenty as you’ll be burning some serious calories.
If
you plan on spending the evening, make sure you have everything you
need for overnight camping. We will provide transportation to Selma that
evening after dinner for folks who want to spend only Friday helping.
The van will leave the Siskiyou Field Institute in Selma again on Saturday at 7am and we’ll run the same program that day, with beers waiting instead of burgers after a full day of work.
You
are welcome to meet us at the trailhead on your own either or both
days. Please just let me know your plans and try your best to be on
time. We will not wait for stragglers.
I apologize for the short
notice on details, but they were late coming together and a family
emergency called me away early this week, and I’m just now hopping back
into it.
If you have any questions at all, please let me know.
Calling/texting right now is probably best as I try to crawl myself out
of from underneath a mountain of emails and voicemails.
I’m looking forward to this very much and hope you can make it. Thanks and happy trails.
