Wimbledon champion’s agent confirms couple, who have been together for eight years, are engaged

Andy Murray, the tennis player who last year ended a 77-year wait for a British men’s singles champion at Wimbledon, is to marry Kim Sears, his long-term girlfriend.

The couple, who have been together for eight years, were engaged last Wednesday. Typically, Murray did not want to make a fuss with a public announcement but his agent has confirmed that the Scot proposed last week.

Sears, a 26-year-old artist, is a familiar sight supporting the 27-year-old Scot during Wimbledon fortnight but they have tried hard to keep their relationship out of the limelight.

Murray sparked a frenzy of speculation this year when he joked on Twitter that they were already engaged and was forced to clarify the situation.

Murray has endured an up-and-down year on the court after a stellar 2012 and 2013 during which he won the US Open, Olympic gold and the Wimbledon title.

Despite being a prolific user of Twitter, Murray has not dropped any hints about his proposal on the social networking site. Instead, on Wednesday, he asked for tips on what they should do on holiday in the Philippines.

Murray and Sears met at the US Open in 2005 when they were teenagers, but their relationship did not become public knowledge until a year later.

In his book on his quest to bury a 77-year hoodoo by claiming the Wimbledon title, Murray said he had thought about settling down. “I would like to start a family and try to be a good father,” he wrote. “That’s important to me. It’s something that I’m starting to think about because Kim and I have been together for eight years.”

Throughout his career, Murray has preferred to let his prowess on the court do the talking and kept questions about his private life at arm’s length.

But, as he has become more comfortable with the media, he last year allowed BBC cameras to follow him in a fly-on-the-wall documentary that showed him relaxing with Sears and their dogs.

Murray’s mother, Judy, was recently voted out of BBC Saturday night show Strictly Come Dancing.
