msoptoutSecurity expert, Krebs, just released a warning this morning as users start going for Microsoft’s Free download of Windows 10:  Windows 10 shares your wifi with contacts.  Unless you opt out of Wifi Sense, during the install process, Microsoft will by default (Express settings) allow your password (though encrypted) to be exposed and anyone from your Hotmail/Outlook, Skype or Facebook contact list who gets within range of your wifi to have access.  Nice, right?

To address this issue, Microsoft has a protocol to allow users to opt out here

And for those who want to know more about Wifi Sense, here’s the FAQ

Krebs goes further to suggest a few steps to make your device more secure:

  1. Prior to upgrade to Windows 10, change your Wi-Fi network name/SSID to something that includes the terms “_nomap_optout”.

  2. After the upgrade is complete, change the privacy settings in Windows to disable Wi-Fi Sense sharing.

  3. If you haven’t already done so, consider additional steps to harden the security of your Wi-Fi network.

Why all the fuss?  Because users tend to use hackable passwords still and they also tend to use the same password for everything, or at least several access points on the web.  Its really an accident waiting to happen.  So be safe out there and protect your network.
