Marauders Softball Helping the Community

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Marauders Softball team took to the streets instead of the field last week to help out around the community.

The Bismarck Marathon held it's annual race on Saturday, September 20, in an event that stretches 26.2 miles around the city.

The event is run by a non-profit organization that relies on volunteers. About 250 volunteers helped out this year and 19 of them were from the Marauders Softball team including players and coaches.

Tanner Blair, the volunteer coordinator, said, "It takes a lot of people to manage such a large tract of land. And because the Marathon is a non-profit organization, we rely entirely on volunteers to ensure a safe running experience for the participants. The U-Mary Women's Softball team played an essential role in this effort.

"In addition to carrying out the assignment asked of them, every one of the 19 volunteers went above and beyond to encourage the runners and boost their spirits. Time and again, we heard about how great the volunteers were and how they inspired the runners to keep going."

With over 1700 participants, the Marathon needed as much help as they could get and the Marauders were more than happy to lend a hand.

After the Bismarck Marathon, the Softball team assisted with the 2014 Savor the Flavor hosted by the Sanford Health Foundation on Friday, September 26.

The event is to help raise money for the Sanford Children's Center of Excellence.  Proceeds went directly to the funding of all children's departments within the Bismarck Region of Sanford Health such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department, the Children's Hospital, Pediatric Oncology, and the Dakota Children's Advocacy Center, among others. Any amount raised was matched dollar for dollar by Sanford.

The Softball team helped with greeting guests and assisting the restaurants involved with the event.

Keep an eye out for your Marauders in future community events.
