Thursday Morning Special Events for Families!


When the kids are clamoring for something fun to do this summer, don't forget the Library District! The summer schedule is packed with great options, but you don't want to miss the exciting Thursday morning event series!

 

Thursday, July 31, 10 am, A Musical Celebration - One World:  Chris Merwin of One World has traveled the globe studying indigenous music and collecting exotic instruments and experiences, which he shares with his audiences. His philosophy is one of cultural harmony and diversity, which always shines through in his music.

 

Thursday, August 7, 10 am, Mad Science: Fire & Ice - Reactions in Action: Put on your science lab coats and get ready for some sizzlin' excitement! Learn about the amazing properties of fire and combustion. Then, cool off with spectacular demonstrations involving dry ice! Check out the "Big Burp", the "Spoon Sizzle" and the famous "Mad Science Shower", as we explore the science behind this amazing frozen gas.

 

Thursday, August 14, 10 am, Jester Jim:  With nothing more than a trunk full of props, Jester Jim will have you cracking up in your seat.  This fast-paced show is packed with fun and excitement that features juggling, balancing, and beatboxing.

 

All performances are appropriate for kids of all ages, and explore the Summer Reading Program theme of Fizz Book Read!  There is no charge for any of these events and no registration required.  Stage performances are scheduled for The Auditorium, 105 Market Street, Poughkeepsie. 

Local Authors, Local History
 

The Library District continues its multi-week series with authors who write about local people, places and events. Join us Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am at Adriance Memorial Library to meet these engaging speakers.  The author's books will be available for sale and signing. All speaker events will be at the Adriance Charwat Meeting Room.

 

July 30 - Enterprise and Courage: The Civil War Years at Mohonk: Author Robi Josephson traces the earliest days of the property and origins of mountain house traditions.

 

August 6 - FDR and the Post Office: A Young Boy's Fascination; A World Leader's Passion: Anthony Musso explores FDR's lifetime passion for the Post Office Department and how it extended well beyond stamp collecting.

 Unique Arts Collaboration:
The Visual and the Written 
In a dynamic neighborhood collaboration, the Library District and Barrett Art Center partner to bring John Nieman's visual and literary work to Poughkeepsie.  Barrett Art Center, literally up the street from Adriance Memorial Library, hosts an exhibit of Nieman's art August 1 - August 30, with an opening reception on Friday, August 1, from 6 - 8 pm.  Adriance highlights Nieman's writing with two programs.

 

Tag!  The Play of Visual and Written Art: On Saturday, August 9, from 3 - 5 pm, Adriance Memorial Library hosts John Nieman for an introductory presentation about his art, his writing, and the interplay between the two.  "The art always comes first for me," says artist and author John Nieman about his visual art and short stories. "Sometimes I don't write until years after I create the art, but it's different for each work."Following the presentation at the library, Nieman will walk with participants up Noxon Street to the Barrett Art Center.  Here, patrons will have an opportunity to view John's works and gather inspiration for their own writing for next week's reading, if they choose to participate.    

 

You're It! The Play of Visual and Written Art, Part 2: 

The collaboration continues on Saturday, August 16, from 3 - 5 pm. John Nieman welcomes participants back to the Barrett Art Center to read aloud their poems, essays or short stories (word limited) inspired by a photo or work of art. Family and friends are welcome for this read-aloud event. Light refreshments offered.

 

Barrett Art Center is located at 55 Noxon Street in Poughkeepsie, one block from Adriance Memorial Library, 93 Market Street in Poughkeepsie.

Summer Fun
at Morgan Lake

This summer, the Library District has teamed up with the Morgan Lake Revitalization Project leader and founder Jocelyn Wallace to provide a free monthly outdoor story time experience for kids.  Each event features a theme intended to introduce children to the joys of the great  outdoors.  Stories, songs and games are all a part of this great activity.  The next story time at the lake  will be Saturday August 23 from 11-12.  Bring a blanket and have some fun!

Family Literacy Fun
 
DaybyDayNY is a calendar with content that gives families with young children daily activities and a story to read together. The story, provided each day by One More Story, is in the form of an eBook that includes original music and sound effects. In addition, the website includes monthly activities, storytelling and nursery rhyme videos, rhymes for young children, craft activities for children and their caregivers, health information, and reading lists. The website is designed to help parents and caregivers increase their young child's cognitive skills and have fun together at the same time.
