Baseball Walks Off Against Bakersfield

Box Score

EDINBURG – Freshman Blake Thomas hit a walk-off two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 2-1 on Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Junior Jesus Garcia led off the ninth with a fly ball to right field, but Chance Gusbeth dropped the ball. One out later, redshirt junior Edinburg alum Lee Rios doubled. Senior Shane Ammon hit the ball back to the mound. The throw came home, but the runners didn't try to advance, allowing the Broncs to load the bases. After a fielder's choice kept the bases loaded, Thomas hit a 2-1 pitch over the head of centerfielder Jordie Hein to end the game.

That made a winner of Broncs (16-23, 6-7 WAC) senior Sam Street (9-0), who is now tied for the NCAA lead in wins after pitching his NCAA-leading seventh complete game. Street struck out three while allowing five hits. He did not walk anyone while pitching his third-straight complete game. Street retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced.

The Roadrunners (14-21, 7-6 WAC) got their lone run in the second when Oscar Sonay singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Ross Hough.

Taylor Aikenhead (5-5) was the tough luck loser. He allowed just three hits, two of which didn't leave the infield, and three walks while striking out seven in his second complete game of the season.

The Broncs and Roadrunners play the middle game of this three-game series on Friday at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5.
