This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My young artists are so enthusiastic to learn about art: the process, the history, and it's place in their worlds. My students also need literacy support, and so I incorporate reading into all of my lessons.
With a large Spanish-speaking population at my school, language exposure is key for those learning English, and reading aloud is essential to building the vocabularies of all little learners.
In addition to reading aloud, students love having time to look through our art books, learning a variety of concepts.
My Project
I often introduce art concepts and artists with a book from my class library. While I have a great selection of books, the longer I teach, the more stories I need to pull from my shelves. I have selected a variety of books about artists and media to help inspire and influence the young artists in my classroom.
Literacy is beneficial in all subjects, and I especially love incorporating it into art lessons.
My school has a large ESL population, and so reading aloud to students helps strengthen vocabulary acquisition.
Additionally, all learners benefit from being read to, and offering another visual avenue helps students experience deeper learning. Adding to my classroom library will supplement the hands on art experiences children are having in my classroom.
