Earlier this year, we reported that the W train would likely return in November. The MTA also included the W on maps that were set to come out when the Second Avenue subway debuted. And now, a Redditor has spotted the MTA advertising the return of the train.

Reddit user AirlineFlyer saw signs announcing the W would be back on November 7th posted in the 34th Street - Penn Station stop earlier today. According to the signs, W service will return and the train will run local in Queens and Manhattan on weekdays between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Whitehall St-South Ferry.

The W's return will also result in a few changes:

  • N trains will begin running express in Manhattan on weekdays and will run local on late nights and weekends
  • Q trains will only operate in Manhattan and Brooklyn between 57 St-7 Av and Coney Island, and will continue to run express in Manhattan
  • R train service will be extended to Manhattan during late night hours and will run from Bay Ridge-95 St and Whitehall St-South Ferry

W service was suspended in 2010 when the MTA's budget deficit was $1.2 billion. (It later climbed to $15 billion in 2014 and shrunk down to $9.9 billion the following year. The MTA has a plan in place to reduce the deficit to $305 million by 2018.)
